WHY DO DOGS LIVE LESS THAN HUMANS?
I saw this on a friend’s Facebook today and adored it! I don’t know who credit goes to, but had to share it:
Being a veterinarian, I’d been called to examine a 10 year old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker and hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found that he was dying of cancer. I told them we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia for him in their home. As we made the arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though he might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker‘s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm as he was petting the old dog for the last time that I wondered if he really understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away, and little boy seemed to accept his transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that dogs’ lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who’d been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.” Startled, we all turned to him, and what came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation, and it’s changed the way I try to live. He said,
“People are born so that they can learn how to live good life, like loving everybody and being nice, right?”
He continued …
“Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay here for as long as we do.”

If only any of you knew just how much I’ve learned over the years from my own fur babies. As of late, in so many ways, “Lord Walter The Williamson” has been one of our biggest heroes in the 635 days since his Daddy had to cross over to The Brighter Side Of Grey. Someday, when the time is right, I’ll venture back and tell you all about that, but as for now, the actual miracle of his presence in our lives and the mere reason I believe he was sent to us in the first place is just too overwhelming for even “all my words”. Sufficed to say, at the end of the day, I am one of those people who finds it no coincidence that “DOG” is “GOD” spelled backwards. If you know, you know. If you don’t, you don’t. They aren’t just four-legged creatures … they’re four-legged teachers and “peopometers“! With that, let’s all strive to remember the lessons we can learn from dogs:
